After times characterized by battles and conquerors, among which Arabs and Romans, the town of Zafra was finally under the reign of the Suarez de Figueroa family in the beginning of the XV century. The Suarez de Figueroa family were first lords, then counts and finally gained the title of Dukes of Feria by the grace of King Phillip II. The Dukes of Feria got home in a castle-palace built in 1437 on the remains of a Muslim fortress. Today that majestic building houses the Parador de Zafra. The Parador de Zafra wasn't only the residence of the Dukes of Feria and their court, but also a short term lodging for illustrious visitors, even the great conqueror Hernán Costés stayed there before departing for the New World. Times of war gave this impressive building a look more similar to a military fortress than an aristocratic palace, nevertheless the interior shows with great pride the beautiful decorations and opulent wooden furnishings only displayed by the most important royal buildings of its time. Coats of arms and pieces of armoury evoke times of lordly manners and bloody battles. The delightful courtyard and the Renaissance cloister came later as a renovation work by architect Juan de Herrera, who reinvented the castle's fortress looking into a much more welcoming atmosphere. Today the castle's chapel with a Gothic Mudejar dome remains intact. Visitors remain open-mouthed by the magnificent 9 battlement towers, which are erected in a way that still today seems to defend the castle from alienating conquerors. The Parador de Zafra Hotel also offers five spacious conference rooms perfect for corporative use, as they are equipped with modern audiovisual amenities.
